Quick answer
What does a check engine light mean?
The check engine light comes on when your car’s computer detects a fault in the engine, ignition, fuel, emissions or one of the sensors that watch them. The light and its stored code tell you which system reported the problem, not which part failed. Testing finds the part.
Steady light
A problem was detected, but it is usually not an emergency. Keep driving normally and have it checked soon. Waiting can let a small fault become a bigger repair.
Flashing light
Usually a severe misfire that can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and have the car inspected before driving further.
Common causes
Common reasons the light comes on
These are the faults we see most often behind a check engine light. The code narrows it down; testing confirms it.
-
Loose or damaged gas cap
A cap that does not seal lets fuel vapor escape and trips an evaporative system code.
-
Oxygen sensors
Worn sensors misread exhaust oxygen, which hurts fuel economy and emissions.
-
Spark plugs and ignition coils
Worn plugs or a failing coil cause misfires, rough idle and lost power.
-
Catalytic converter
A clogged or failing converter often follows misfires that went unrepaired.
-
Mass airflow sensor
A dirty or failed sensor upsets the air and fuel mix, causing hesitation or stalling.
-
Vacuum and EVAP leaks
Cracked hoses and leaking seals let in unmetered air or let fuel vapor out.
How it works
How we track down the cause
-
Read the codes
We scan stored and pending codes and the data captured when the light came on.
-
Test the system
We test the components the code points to, so parts are not replaced on a guess.
-
Explain what we found
You hear the cause in plain language and get an estimate before any repair begins.
-
Repair and recheck
Once you approve the work, we fix the cause and recheck the system.
FAQ
Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive it, but have it checked soon. If the light is flashing, the engine is likely misfiring. Slow down and avoid driving until it is inspected.
Can a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light?
Yes. A cap that does not seal can set an evaporative system code. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light stays on after several days of driving, have the system checked.
Will the light turn off by itself?
Sometimes. If the fault stops happening, the light can go out after several drive cycles, but the code stays stored in the computer. A light that comes and goes still deserves a check.
Is a free code read enough to know what is wrong?
A code read tells you which system reported a fault. It does not say which part failed. Testing the components behind the code is what finds the actual cause.
Do you work on foreign and domestic vehicles?
Yes. We diagnose and repair all makes and models, foreign and domestic, including cars, trucks and SUVs.
