Quick answer

What makes a transmission slip?

The most common causes are low or worn-out fluid, a leak, a faulty solenoid or sensor, or worn clutches and bands inside the transmission. Some of these are simple fixes and some need a rebuild, which is why the transmission should be diagnosed before any work is recommended.

Late or rough shifts

Often a fluid, sensor or software problem. Not an emergency, but have it checked soon, since small problems can wear the transmission faster.

Slipping, grinding or a burning smell

Revs climbing without the car speeding up, grinding or a burning smell can mean overheating or internal damage. Drive as little as possible and have it checked.

Common causes

Common reasons a transmission acts up

Shifting problems usually come from one of these. Diagnosing the cause tells us whether a fluid service, a repair or a rebuild is the right fix.

  • Low fluid or a leak

Red or brown spots under the car mean fluid is leaking from a seal, pan gasket or cooler line.

  • Old, burnt fluid

Fluid breaks down with heat and miles. Dark fluid with a burnt smell no longer protects the parts inside.

  • Solenoids and sensors

The computer shifts the transmission through solenoids and sensors. When one fails, shifts get late, harsh or stuck.

  • Torque converter

Shudder at steady speeds or slipping as you pull away can point to the torque converter.

  • Worn clutches and bands

Internal wear causes slipping between gears and usually means a rebuild.

  • Overheating

Towing, stop-and-go traffic and Florida heat raise fluid temperature, which wears the transmission faster.

How it works

How we repair your transmission

  1. Check the fluid

We look at the fluid level, color and smell, and check for leaks.

  2. Scan and test drive

We read stored codes and drive the vehicle to feel how it shifts.

  3. Explain the options

You hear what we found in plain language and get an estimate before any work begins.

  4. Repair or rebuild

We do the fix the transmission needs, from a fluid flush to a complete rebuild.

FAQ

Questions drivers ask

How often should transmission fluid be changed?

It depends on the vehicle, so start with the interval in your owner’s manual. Towing, stop-and-go driving and heat call for more frequent service. We can check the fluid and tell you where it stands.

What color should transmission fluid be?

Most automatic transmission fluid starts out red and darkens with use. Dark brown or black fluid, or fluid that smells burnt, is due for service and worth having checked.

Is it safe to drive with a slipping transmission?

It is not a good idea. Slipping builds heat and can turn a smaller repair into a rebuild, and the vehicle may not respond when you need it to. Drive as little as possible and have it checked.

Do I need a rebuild or a repair?

It depends on what is wrong. Fluid, sensor, solenoid and leak problems can often be repaired. Internal wear usually calls for a rebuild. We diagnose it first and explain the options.

Why is my check engine light on with shifting problems?

The computer stores codes when it sees a transmission sensor, solenoid or slipping problem, and often turns on the check engine light. Reading those codes is one of the first steps in our diagnosis.
